Day 2: ARUSHA NATIONAL PARK & TARANGIRE

After breakfast take an optional trek of Mt Kilimanjaro. Depart after the trek for Arusha National Park.

Arusha National Park is a multi-faceted jewel, often overlooked by safarigoers, despite offering the opportunity to explore a beguiling diversity of habitats within a few hours. Although elephants are uncommon in Arusha National Park, and lions absent altogether, leopards and spotted hyenas may be seen slinking around in the early morning and late afternoon. It is also at dusk and dawn that the veil of cloud on the eastern horizon is most likely to clear, revealing the majestic snow-capped peaks of Kilimanjaro, only 50km (30 miles) distant.

But it is Kilimanjaro’s unassuming cousin, Mount Meru – the fifth highest in Africa at 4,566 metres (14,990 feet) – that dominates the park’s horizon. Its peaks and eastern foot slopes protected within the national park, Mt. Meru offers unparalleled views of its famous neighbour, while also forming a rewarding hiking destination in its own right.

Passing first through wooded savannah where buffalos and giraffes are frequently encountered, the ascent of Meru leads into forests aflame with red-hot pokers and dripping with Spanish moss, before reaching high open heath spiked with giant lobelias. Everlasting flowers cling to the alpine desert, as delicately-hoofed klipspringers mark the hike’s progress. Astride the craggy summit, Kilimanjaro stands unveiled, blushing in the sunrise.

After a picnic lunch we continue our journey towards Tarangire passing through Arusha, the 2nd largest city of Tanzania. We reach Tarangire National Park by late afternoon. Overnight at Lake Burunge Tented Camp or Maramboi Tented Camp.

Enjoy a night safari in Lake Manyara National Park.

Meal Plan: Full Board

Day 3: WALKING SAFARI & TARAGIRE NATIONAL PARK

Early morning wake up call for a walking safari on the dried bed of Lake Manyara (weather permitting). Your Masai ranger-guide will introduce you to the Masai way of surviving in the bush. You will be within touching distance to zebra, wildebeest, giraffes and many other jungle residents.

Return to the lodge for breakfast before check out and proceeding to Tarangire National Park.

Tarangire National Park is the sixth largest national park in Tanzania, it is located in Manyara Region. The name of the park originates from the Tarangire River that crosses the park. The Tarangire River is the primary source of fresh water for wild animals in the Tarangire Ecosystem during the annual dry season. The park is famous for its high density of elephants and baobab trees. Visitors to the park in the June to November dry season can expect to see large herds of thousands of zebra, wildebeest and cape buffalo. Other common resident animals include waterbuck, giraffe, dik dik, impala, eland, Grant’s gazelle, velvet monkey, banded mongoose, and olive baboon. Predators in Tarangire include African lion, leopard, cheetah, caracal, honey badger, and African wild dog. Home to more than 550 bird species, the park is a haven for bird enthusiasts.

The park is also famous for the termite mounds that dot the landscape. Those that have been abandoned are often home to dwarf mongoose.

A packed lunch will be provided which can be enjoyed at your convenience. Proceed towards Ngorongoro Crater by late afternoon. Overnight at your choice of lodge in Karatu at the gates of Ngorongoro.

Meal Plan:Full Board

Day 4: NGORONGORO CRATER

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA) is a protected area and a World Heritage Site located 180 km (110 mi) west of Arusha in the Crater Highlands area of Tanzania. The area is named after Ngorongoro Crater, a large volcanic caldera within the area. Ngorongoro was named by the Maasai as El-Nkoronkoro meaning Gift of Life. This was because they were migrating from Central Africa for a permanent settlement. That is why the Ngorongoro Conservation Area is mostly occupied by the Maasai. Based on fossil evidence found at the Olduvai Gorge, various hominid species have occupied the area for 3 million years.

After breakfast, descend into the ‘8th Wonder of the World’, a unique biosphere that has remained virtually unchanged since the dawn of time. Enclosed within its towering walls are grasslands, swamps, forests, saltpans, a fresh water lake and a glorious variety of birdlife. Here too are all the members of the ‘Big Five’ (lion, elephant, rhino, leopard and buffalo) as well as a large cast of plains game and one of Africa’s densest populations of predators. Enjoy a picnic lunch on the crater floor before proceeding towards Serengeti. Overnight at your choice of lodge in Serengeti.

Meal Plan:Full Board

Day 5: SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK

The park is Tanzania’s oldest national park and remains the flagship of the country’s tourism industry, providing a major draw to the Northern Safari Circuit. The park covers 14,750 square kilometres (5,700 sq mi)[7] of grassland plains, savanna, riverine forest, and woodlands. The park lies in northwestern Tanzania, bordered to the north by the Kenyan border, where it is continuous with the Masai Mara National Reserve. Serengeti plains: the almost treeless grassland of the south is the most emblematic scenery of the park. This is where the wildebeest breed, as they remain in the plains from December to May. Other hoofed animals – zebra, gazelle, impala, hartebeest, topi, buffalo, waterbuck – also occur in huge numbers during the wet season. “Kopjes” are granite florations that are very common in the region, and they are great observation posts for predators, as well as a refuge for hyrax and pythons.

This will be your home for next two days. Enjoy unlimited game drives and the luxuries offered by your lodge.
