Loisaba Conservancy

Loisaba Conservancy

Loisaba is a large private wildlife conservancy and former cattle ranch in northern Kenya, on the Laikipia Plateau. The conservancy spans about 58,000 acres. • Originally a ranch, the land was gradually transformed into a conservancy focused on balancing wildlife conservation with sustainable ranching and community livelihoods. • Now it is owned and managed by a community-trust together with partner organisations, under a plan to protect wildlife, maintain ecological connectivity and support neighbouring local communities.
Wildlife & Conservation Significance
Loisaba Conservancy hosts hundreds of species — including over 350 bird species and around 60 mammal species. Big African wildlife such as elephants, lions, leopards, and endangered species like the reticulated giraffe, African wild dog, Grevy’s zebra, and — recently — rhinos are all found there.
It lies within a key wildlife corridor — part of a broader ecosystem that allows animals to migrate safely, sustaining biodiversity across a vast region. The conservancy uses conservation measures such as habitat-management, water resource monitoring, controlled grazing, anti-poaching patrols (including sniffer dogs), and scientific wildlife monitoring. Their model emphasises coexistence: protecting wildlife while supporting local pastoralist communities, sustaining livestock grazing in community lands, and providing economic opportunities via ecotourism and conservation work.
Why Loisaba Might Appeal to You
If you care about authentic safari, wildlife conservation, and ethical travel — Loisaba offers a unique, less-crowded safari experience compared with more commercialised national parks. The size of the conservancy, the diversity of species (including rare/endangered), and a serious commitment to conservation and community impact make it especially interesting.
If you like comfort but also want to feel connected to nature — the “tent-camp + bush + big skies + wildlife” vibe (or even the Star Beds) can be a magical experience.
